Who Killed The Whyte Horse In Canmore?

Well this is a first for me. A client texted me yesterday to let me know that he was sorry that the café in Canmore that he was considering buying had “ditched”. Unsure of what he meant, I called to ask. He informed me that a family member who lives in Canmore was told that the owners of the restaurant had done a “midnight move” and stripped the place bare. Not only that, but they had left a DEAD horse on the front lawn!

Not that I didn’t believe him or his kin, but I had to verify this disturbing turn of events. I called my good friend Frank Barbaro, owner of the great little Italian restaurant Santa Lucia. Frank confirmed that they had done exactly that, and it was a horse skeleton. Seriously….WTF.. why is the realtor always the last to know? Not that I would have showed up with my truck and helped move tables and chairs or anything like that, but a phone call would have been ok with me!

Well.. I guess it was a not so subtle statement that the landlord had killed the Whyte Horse? The question now begs….do I still have a listing??

P.S. Here is an article that ran in the Calgary Herald the day after this post. Light switches and toilets......REALLY??!! Story Link

Profitable Family Restaurant Franchise – Calgary

This well-run franchise restaurant is located in a vibrant Calgary community, surrounded by established residential neighborhoods with a strong mix of families and higher-income households. The area provides a steady stream of loyal guests who enjoy the comfortable atmosphere, diverse menu, and family-friendly touches that keep them coming back.

The business is exceptionally clean, well maintained, and fully staffed, making it easy for a new owner to step in with confidence. A large regular clientele includes families with children who love the popular “treasure chest,” as well as couples, professionals, and retirees. A sunny patio offers additional seating during the summer months, further boosting sales.

Highlights

  • Strong and steadily growing sales
  • One of the best-run locations within the brand
  • Situated in a desirable residential area with strong demographics
  • Established, loyal customer base across all age groups
  • Fully staffed and turnkey ready
  • Seller committed to assisting with transition – will remain on in a service role to personally introduce the new owner to staff, regular guests, and community partners, ensuring a smooth handover and business continuity

The current owners are preparing for retirement after years of successful operation. Their willingness to stay on for a transition period makes this a unique opportunity—new owners can quickly establish themselves with the support of an experienced operator who knows the clientele, the systems, and the community.

Franchise opportunities of this caliber, with built-in mentorship and a proven track record, are rare. Don’t miss your chance to step into a profitable, community-rooted business with immediate cash flow and excellent growth potential.

**Established Community Liquor Retailer with Real Estate Ownership Opportunity** This locally trusted liquor retailer has built a strong reputation for friendly, knowledgeable service and a well curated product mix that appeals to both everyday shoppers and discerning enthusiasts. With consistent customer traffic and strong community goodwill, the business operates as a reliable neighbourhood destination known for quality selection and convenience. The store features a broad and diverse inventory of beer, wine and spirits sourced from both domestic producers and international markets. Customers enjoy access to popular national brands, premium imports, and a thoughtful mix of craft offerings. The wine portfolio spans Old World and New World regions, offering approachable everyday selections alongside premium bottles suited for entertaining and gifting. The spirits category is comprehensive, including Canadian and International Whiskies, Vodka, Gin, Rum, Tequila, Scotch, Liqueurs, Brandy and Cognac, providing balanced appeal across multiple price points and customer preferences. Complementing the core categories are Coolers, Ciders, “Ready-to-Drink” beverages, non alcoholic options, and essential add on products such as mixers and ice, reinforcing its position as a convenient one stop shop. A significant differentiating factor is the opportunity to acquire the real estate along with the business. Ownership of the underlying property provides long term stability, protection against rising lease costs, and the potential for future appreciation an increasingly rare advantage in today’s retail environment. For owner operators seeking control over occupancy costs, or investors looking for both operating income and tangible asset security, this combined business and real estate offering represents a compelling and well balanced acquisition opportunity.
