Not very often does a true Neighbourhood Pub come on the market in South Calgary. This is exactly that, on a busy street, in great community that is seeing lots of growth. Young families are moving in and renovating older homes, so there is lots of diversity in the age groups in the area, perfect for a busy “neighbourhood local”. There is tons of parking and lots of drive by traffic, and the location has been operating here for a very long time, so it is well established in the community.

The room is wide open and provides great sight lines if you wanted to do live music or Karaoke from time to time. The kitchen is laid out like a basic pub should be, not too big, but enough to be able to do a solid pub style menu.

Please contact...

Lovely Inner-City Restaurant for Sale.

This is a wonderfully designed and maintained restaurant, filled with natural light and a warm and soothing décor. The interior design is nicely contemporary and would adapt to a large number of culinary concepts if you decided to go a different way than the current operation. There is lots of street parking around the location, and lots of office and business

The kitchen is medium sized and very efficient use of space, allowing you to maximize the floor plate for seating and generating revenue. It has all the equipment needed to produce a good size menu, and everything is in very good repair.

Please call me for all the information and an after-hours tour of this beautiful room.

Unique is the only word you can use to describe this wonderful business, it has been lovingly built over the years and has a great following. There have been others that have come and gone over the years but this one has stood the test of time because of their commitment to creating a great customer experience. This is an authentic Tea House with all of the right things to make it one of the only true Tea House experiences in Southern Alberta. A large selection of tea's from all over the world that you can try by the pot at the perfect temperature or that you can buy the loose leaves and take them home. It has nothing but potential to grow the business with the additon of a larger menu and some creative marketing. The current owners are...

Here is a contemporary pub for sale in a cool, vibrant neighbourhood with lots of foot and drive by traffic.

This pub has been freshly renovated, so it looks and feels great, with nice modern decor and great ceiling height. It is comfortable and filled with natural light, from the huge floor to the ceiling windows that open onto the patio. There are a lot of seats at the bar where you can watch the game on multiple large screen TV's.

The second floor is perfect for overflow on the busy nights as well as booking it out for private functions and meetings. It has its own pation as well.

There is parking out back of the building as well as underground parking that is only for the businesses.

Give me a call and we can set up a tour of this...

If you are looking for a busy Irish pub in a great neighbourhood with tons of traffic and lots of parking this is a perfect fit. It is in a major power centre with huge national anchor tenants giving you lots of consumer traffic every day of the week. The interior is warm and inviting with lots of wood, making it comfortable for your customers. The facility is well taken care of with a focus on cleanliness. It is very well laid out and has a great bar with lots of seats at the wood.

The kitchen is excellent with lots of equipment and capable of producing good volume and potential for catering as well. Give me a call and we can set up a tour of this great South Calgary pub.

Covid 19 Payroll Subsidy Info
For employers, we are getting more detail on the payroll subsidy:
https://www.singleton.com/2020/03/covid-19-the-canada-emergency-wage-subsidy/
  • $847 per employee per week or 75% of up to $58,700 salary, whichever is less
  • Still retroactive to March 15 (so far)
  • Expectation is that you don’t cut employee wages
  • Business must demonstrate/prove a minimum revenue loss of 30%
  • Federal government will be introducing severe penalties for abuse of the program
  • Application process expected to be announced within the next 2 weeks
  • No limit on business size

For those who were considering using the job-sharing option, this is now, for most businesses, a better option.

Next Steps:  I have started building detailed 90-day business financial plans for some of you.  This provides a specific list of actions based on your own financial P&L statements that includes estimating the impact of using the government programs and includes a list of other actions you can do to help your business weather the storm.  If any of you are interested in having this done for your business, contact me.

If any of you will need a business loan to survive a prolonged event, but would not otherwise qualify for a loan, there is money available from the government.  https://www.bdc.ca/en/pages/special-support.aspx.

Small businesses with a payroll between $50K to $1M should look to the Canada Emergency Business Account https://www.canada.ca/en/department-finance/news/2020/03/additional-support-for-canadian-businesses-from-the-economic-impact-of-covid-19.html  As described in my emails last week, this if interest-free, $40,000 where you can be forgiven up to $10,000 if you pay it back before the end of 2022.

Here is a description of the application process and the questions you will likely be asked https://www.krp.ca/lending-rules-for-bdc-covid-19-relief-program-take-shape

This is the last week you have to re-plan your businesses for the next 2-3 months to stay in front of the situation.  If you don’t know what you need to be doing and how much of it you need to be doing, please contact me.   I want to see you all survive this event as best as possible!

Next 2 weeks, the focus will need to shift to full-implementation of that plan and start looking for short-term business opportunities with customers who are less impacted by COVID-19.  This is a very tactical that looks a lot like war-time situation management.   Even with a plan, the situation going forward will be fluid (some good, some bad).

Later in April,  your planning will need to focus on re-positioning your businesses to be ready to sling-shot out of this event!

Please continue to pay strict attention to all of the hygiene/safety recommendations and emotional/mental health issues discussed here over the past two weeks!   Let’s do everything we can to keep our employees, customers, suppliers an colleagues healthy so we can all get back to work faster!

Misura Berteit & Associates - Resources for Businesses during COVID-19

We at Misura Berteit & Associates understand that the events of the last few weeks have left a lot of “unanswer-able” questions.  While we don’t have the answers, we do feel that there are some resources available out there.  We encourage you to review and keep informed with the latest updates:

1. Government of Canada’s website: Coronavirus disease (COVID-19): Resources for Canadian Businesses:    https://www.tradecommissioner.gc.ca/campaign-campagne/ressources-entreprises-COVID-19-business-resources.aspx?lang=eng

2.    Government of Canada’s website:  Canada’s COVID-19 Economic Response Plan: Support for Canadians and Businesses:   https://www.canada.ca/en/department-finance/news/2020/03/canadas-covid-19-economic-response-plan-support-for-canadians-and-businesses.html

3. Government of Alberta website: COVID -19 supports for Albertans:  https://www.alberta.ca/covid-19-supports-for-albertans.aspx

These pages give several links for questions surrounding:

-    Supporting our employees
-    Financial implications and business preparedness
-    Business travel and events
-    Exporting and doing business in international markets

While we feel that all these issues may not be relevant to each of us and there are (still) no firm answers, at least this is a good start.  If you have discovered a good resource – please share it with us!  We’d love to be able to pass onto our clients and entrepreneurs the networks and resources available out there.

As always, we’re here to support you in any way we can including:

-    Setting up teleconference or video conference meetings

-    We can send you links to upload your information to so it can be delivered to us digitally and encrypted

-    We have a fax machine; while this is generally thought of as outdated technology, it may still come in handy if that’s the delivery method you prefer to use during this period of social distancing

-    Call us for courier / pick-up outside your door to our door

-    General calls; we know that businesses can feel isolated at times like this – feel free to reach out to us as an entrepreneur who just needs to talk.  We may not have the answers but we are business owners ourselves and just talking can alleviate some of the stress sometimes.

COVID 19 - The Emerging "Stress Factor"

In talking to many of you this week, the number one emerging issue is stress.   The rapid rate of change being imposed on us, our employees, suppliers and customers is unprecedented.  The uncertainty regarding our health, both physical and financial, stemming from a dangerous virus racing around the globe is overwhelming many people.

The result is often emotional – anxiety, fear, and depression.  This in turn impacts morale and mental health, both yours and everyone you work with – the ones working on-site, the ones working remotely and the ones now on EI waiting to come back.

They need your leadership.  This is not the zombie apocalypse because we can do a lot to get this under control.  Four things to consider:

  1. Calgary and Edmonton are very different from New York or Milan who have 7.5-10,000 people per km2.  We have only 1,300 (natural advantage in physical distancing).

  2. Calgary and other Albertans are generally following physical distancing and self-isolation, except for a few ass-hole snow birds who now face fines of up to $750,000 and 6 months in jail if they don’t go straight home and self-isolate (today’s news).

  3. Alberta has been aggressively testing our people at four times the rate of Quebec.  We got ahead of this thing early.

  4. Toilet paper is on it’s way.  They are making more.

Human beings are hard-wired to be social. Remember to reach out to a friend, colleague, employee, customer or supplier to see how they are doing (phone, text, facetime, video meetings, email even).   There is no reason physical distancing needs to become human isolation.

Here are three resources to help you deal with stressed out employees, colleagues, suppliers and customers.  More in the coming days:

  • Calgary Chamber of Commerce Webinar:

Employee Morale: Mental Health & Resiliency for your employees
Friday, March, 28, 2020 11:00 MST
Nicolas Beique, Helcim and Usman Tahir Jutt, Chirp Foods Inc. — O/A McDonald’s Restaurants of Canada Limited, will discuss how to build resilient employees and support mental health through a crisis.
